Revitalizing Sumida, the City of Music! Music Tourism Project to Activate Sightseeing River Cruises and Create Waterfront Vitality

Our Role

  • Managed the subsidy application for the Japan Tourism Agency's "Regional Tourism New Discovery Project," from planning the use of the subsidy program through to document preparation and submission
  • Served as the single point of contact for overall project management, stakeholder coordination, and on-site liaison, ensuring smooth project execution
  • Recruited monitor tour participants through "Tabi Plus One" and managed all tour operations on-site entirely in-house

Project Overview

As part of the "Sumida Music City Vision" promoted by Sumida Ward, Tokyo, we developed a "Music Night Cruise" that fuses live music with river sightseeing. Using Koume Bridge Pier and Ryogoku Pier as bases, we created an experiential program allowing guests to enjoy live jazz performances while rediscovering the charm of the Tokyo waterfront and its nighttime scenery.

Beyond generating tourist demand, this initiative also contributes to enhancing the cultural value of the area and energizing the local nighttime economy.

Background

The quality of nighttime activities is a key factor in improving the satisfaction of inbound tourists. However, Japan currently lags behind in nighttime tourism content compared to daytime offerings, and has struggled to meet international travelers' expectations for "night culture" and evening experiences.

To address this challenge, the project drew on the unique cultural assets and scenery rooted in the local area to create new experiential content that visitors can enjoy after dark.

Effectiveness

In FY2025, we plan to continue the Music Cruise while also introducing a new "comedy" themed cruise as a fresh addition to the lineup.
